Eczema inflammation mechanism

AD inflammation is associated with increased Th2 cells in acute skin lesions, but chronic AD results in the infiltration of inflammatory dendritic epidermal cells, macrophages, and eosinophils. IL-12 production by these various cell types results in the switch to a Th1-type cytokine milieu associated with increased IFN-γ (Figure 1). AD is a common disease affecting approximately 6% of the general population, particularly children.  In the United States alone, it is estimated that more than 15 million individuals are afflicted with this disorder.
